Plausible is a lightweight, open-source, privacy-first web analytics tool positioned as the anti-Google-Analytics. Where GA is free because you are the product, Plausible charges money and makes "we don't track or sell your visitors' data" the entire pitch. It's run by a small EU-based team and grew without outside funding.

The model

A usage-based subscription priced on monthly pageviews, billed monthly or annually, with a short free trial rather than a permanent free tier. The code is open source, so technical users can self-host for free — and a meaningful share of them later convert to the paid hosted plan because running it yourself isn't worth the hassle.

What's working

  • Open source as distribution. The public GitHub repo is a top-of-funnel channel that compounds: stars, forks, and self-hosters keep the brand in front of exactly the developers who recommend tools.
  • Radical transparency. A public revenue-and-traffic dashboard earns press, backlinks, and trust in a single move — most companies would never show the number.
  • Owning the comparison keyword. Years of content around "Google Analytics alternative" means they rank for the precise query a switching buyer types into Google.
  • One clean product. A single dashboard with no sprawling feature set means fast onboarding and low support load for a tiny team.

The risk

Privacy is a wedge a larger player can copy, and usage-based pricing ties revenue to customers' traffic — when their pageviews dip, so does your MRR.
